The city of Dallas is the 9th largest city in the nation and the 2nd largest in the state of Texas with a
population of nearly 1.3 Million people. It is the centerpoint of a metro region that includes Dallas,
Fort Worth, Arlington and the surrounding suburbs. Together this metro region is home to some 6 million
people which makes it the 4th largest metro area in the nation. The city was founded in 1841 and incorporated
15 years later and is renowned for its role in the oil industry, banking, telecommunications, transportation,
and computer technology. The historical establishment and importance of Dallas is as a center for the oil
and cotton industries as well as its position among numerous railroad lines.
The terrain of the city is mostly flat and contains two significant water features. The most popular is
White Rock Lake which is a destination for boaters, joggers, rowers and bikers. Also notable is the Dallas
Arboretum and Botanical Garden which lies on the lake's eastern shore. Lake Hubbard is also a nearby
destination for recreation. The climate itself is humid and subtropical. Winters are fairly mild with snowfall
being seen some five days a year. Spring and Autumn are very pleasant and this is the time of year that many
visitors come to Dallas.
The skyline of Dallas has several buildings of great height and is actually considered to be the 15th
tallest city in the world. Most of the noteworth architecture is modernst and postmodernist. Examples of
modernist stylings include the Fountain Place, Renaissance Tower, Bank of America Plaza, and Reunion Tower.
Postmodernist examples include Comerica Bank Tower and JPMorgage Chase Tower. There are a handful of smaller
